How is Trace & Save helping to build a sustainable future?

Trace & Save is an opportunity for farms to become more sustainable while showing consumers how this sustainability is being implemented. It is one thing to say your farm is sustainable, however, Trace & Save provides real data as to whether sustainable agricultural practices are being implemented and followed.
The Trace & Save program is a sustainability assessment platform that offers solutions to increase the level of sustainable farming practices implemented at farms worldwide. It measures the quality of soil, water, atmosphere and nutrients while focusing on biodiversity conservation, animal welfare, and people welfare for a holistic and comprehensive assessment of farming practices.
One of the ways Trace & Save has been able to sample these results is through wastewater management.
Effluent management refers to how wastewater is managed on farms. It is just one of the solutions offered by Trace & Save. This particular solution is geared towards the proper management and use of wastewater. Repurposing wastewater can contribute to the nourishment of the land.
An effluent is the outflowing of water into a centralised body of water. In farming, the water produced on farms by excretion, washing, feeding and other daily tasks is collected and gathered in one space. This has several implications for the environment. Firstly, the effluent is high in nutrient concentration that may be harmful to the environment.
Secondly, if the effluent is flowing into a natural body of water, it could pollute the water and all of the streams flowing into it. For these reasons, the effluent must be effectively managed and repurposed so that it can contribute to sustainable farming practices.
Whether wastewater is usable depends on how it is treated and where it is used. It requires adequate planning and resources, and once the infrastructure has been implemented on the farm, effluent management is an asset to the sustainable farming mission.
Trace & Save
The Trace & Save program is effective because it keeps track of effluent samples to ensure the sustainable use of resources. The samples provide information on the quality of the effluent, including nitrogen and pH balance readings, allowing for farmers to make calculated and informed decisions on its distribution.
Trace & Save also takes soil samples which help to determine whether the effluent is being irrigated effectively. Unmonitored effluent distribution in irrigated areas can lead to the pollution of freshwater resources. This is why strategic management of the wastewater distribution is significant to the farming process.
At Dairy Group, Trace & Save is a mission that we advocate for and promote. Without a consistent and structured strategy for collecting data from farms, sustainability practices may fall by the wayside. With this initiative, sustainability not only becomes possible, it becomes compulsory.
